We heard some news saying Sri Lankan Government is looking forward to control sri lankan IT Industry and make big changes to Internet Policy.
few month back some China IT Specialist were in sri lanka having discussion with GOSL. But as a heavy internet user i don't agree with the rules that GOSL is planning to implement.(may be i am wrong).

some news justifies that GOSL is looking to block Google even ? !

as you may aware Google and some other Google products and most popular websites has been blocked by china Government and Now Google and some other Big companies started a war against Government monopoly over Internet.

The above screenshot are comments which are posted on nishshanka.net since few days.These are classic spam comments!!!I am writing this to explain how to avoid spam comments being published.Last night i had Skype chat with a friend regarding our personal blogs and he started saying that he has many blog comments than my blog ? (it was a new blog created few months back !)

I had a look @ his website and identified that he has blindly published all spam comments without knowing those are spam comments.

I am getting 10-50 spam comments per day and I have to allocate reasonable time to verify those before publishing.

Don’t be fooled by spam comments .be alert !
Below basic tricks will help you to identify a spam!

1. Look the Name who comments

2 .check whether he has embedded a url to his name(hyperlink)

3. Match the comment content with your post contents? Totally different???

Example Spam Comment:

4. Common sense will be the final key to identify any spam comment.

There are different plug in and techniques to detect spam comments but all those will be useless if you are publishing those blindly.

Fired:spying on Google Voice call logs, chat transcripts and contact lists

Google acknowledged Wednesday that two employees have been terminated after being caught in separate incidents allegedly spying on user e-mails and chats.

David Barksdale, 27, was fired in July after he reportedly accessed the communications of at least four minors with Google accounts, spying on Google Voice call logs, chat transcripts and contact lists, according to Gawker, which broke the story Wednesday.

Google has acknowledged that it fired Barksdale for violating company privacy policy, and acknowledged that it was the second such incident of its kind at the company. Nonetheless, the company insists that it maintains careful control over employee access to user data, and said it's amping up its log-monitoring to guard against similar violations in the future.

The controversy comes as Google faces criticism over admissions that its street-view cars collected private content from Wi-Fi networks while roaming streets in the United States and several other countries. Google blamed the Wi-Fi collection on a "programming error" and a failure in oversight to catch the problem for three years.

The new reports of rogue employee demonstrate that Google is not immune to the ages-old problem of the corrupt insider, even as it gathers more sensitive data about Americans than most government agencies possess.

In the case of one 15-year-old boy Barksdale met through a technology group in Seattle, Washington, he allegedly tapped into the boy's Google Voice call logs after the boy refused to tell him the name of his new girlfriend. Barksdale then reportedly taunted the boy with threats to call the girl.

Barksdale also allegedly accessed contact lists and chat transcripts of account holders and, after one teen blocked him from his Gtalk buddy list, reversed the block. A source told Gawker that Barksdale's intent didn't appear to be to prey on minors for sexual purposes, but simply to goad them and impress them with his level of access and power.

The family of at least one victim complained to Google about Barksdale's activity. After the company investigated, Barksdale was fired.

Google apparently did not report the incidents to law enforcement, although the employees could potentially have infringed federal and state statutes related to unauthorized computer access and stored communications, according to legal and privacy experts. Reuters quotes an anonymous source who says that "law enforcement was not called in after the Barksdale breach was uncovered, because one of the families involved asked to remain anonymous."

Barksdale, based in Kirkwood, Washington, was employed as an engineer with the company's Site Reliability team. The team members, as part of their responsibilities for troubleshooting technical issues related to the site and Google's products, have access to users' accounts. Apparently Barksdale exceeded this authorized access to spy on a group of specific people he'd met.

Another former site reliability engineer told Gawker that Google gives such engineers unfettered access and "does not closely monitor SREs to detect improper access to customers' accounts, because SREs are generally considered highly experienced engineers who can be trusted."

Google revealed to TechCrunch that a second Google employee had also been caught violating user privacy and was also dismissed. Google didn't reveal any details about what or when this occurred, other than to say the other case didn't involve minors.

Bill Coughran, a Google senior vice president of engineering, wrote in a statement that Barksdale was fired for "breaking Google's strict internal privacy policies."

"We carefully control the number of employees who have access to our systems, and we regularly upgrade our security controls — for example, we are significantly increasing the amount of time we spend auditing our logs to ensure those controls are effective," said Coughran. "That said, a limited number of people will always need to access these systems if we are to operate them properly -– which is why we take any breach so seriously."

Marc Rotenberg, executive director of the Electronic Privacy Information Center, said that although Google wasn't obligated to report the issue to police, it probably should have done so anyway.

"To the extent that it impacts the interests of individuals outside the company, I don't think it's sufficient for Google to handle it as an internal matter, which is why there probably needs to be a criminal investigation to ensure that the safety and well-being of others has been protected," he told Threat Level. "Google's HR department can't sign off completely on whether this individual has been appropriately sanctioned for his conduct."

Mark Rasch, a former U.S. federal prosecutor, says that while deciding to report on such incidents is a judgment call for companies, keeping the matter quiet was probably the wrong approach for Google to take in this case.

"Violations of privacy are serious violations," said Rasch, currently director of cybersecurity and privacy consulting at Computer Sciences Corporation. Rasch says that internal privacy breaches will increase as more and more employees and contractors have access to vast databases of consumer data.

Has this ever happened to you? You're writing an email online and you try to copy some text from a webpage. But when you paste it in, you get all the original fonts, colors, and spacing. "Wait!" you say, "I just wanted the text!"

This happened to us so many times while building Google Chrome that we added a special shortcut to do just that. Alongside the common Ctrl-V keyboard shortcut for "paste", Google Chrome supports a similar shortcut, Ctrl-Shift-V, for "paste as plain text". (And it's Command-Shift-Option-V on a Mac.)

You can use this shortcut in any rich text editor (like Gmail's compose window, or when writing in Google Docs) to strip out all the presentation from the original source and just paste in a block of text.

Do you know what Nopcommerce? it is one of best open source asp.net shopping cart.there are many shopping cart application that can be downloaded for free but i would recommand this product as its highly customizable and it has many features that you may love.

but early version of nopcommerce can be misused if user didn't change their default password.

earlier version of nopcommerce came with default admin user name : admin@yourstore.com and password admin.

it has hard coded and people had to change it password as recommended but problem is how many administrator change this.

if you have not changed default admin yet,your site is in a risk.

Change it now.

Update: nopcommerce is now coming with install wizard and it prompt you to change the default account.

As we crawl the web, we see bad content inserted on to thousands of hacked sites each day. The number of sites attacked is staggering and the problem is only getting worse. Hackers and spammers target and successfully compromise any sites they can - small personal sites, schools and universities, even multinational corporations. Spam attacks against forums and user content sections of sites, though not as shocking, are even more widespread.

You may have read in an earlier post that we've begun notifying webmasters about new software versions via Webmaster Tools to help protect their sites. Continuing with our effort to provide more useful information to webmasters, we're happy to announce that we'll soon be sending even more notifications to the Message Center.

Starting this month, we will notify more webmasters of more potential issues we've detected on their websites, including:

Spammy or abused user-generated content
Abused forum pages or egregious amounts of comment spam
Suspected hacking

These notifications are meant to alert webmasters of potential issues and provide next steps on how to get their sites fixed and back into Google's search results. If it pertains to a hacking or abuse issue, the notification will point to example URLs exhibiting this type of behavior. These notifications will run in parallel with our existing malware notifications.

A notice of suspected hacking, for example, will look like this:

We've been notifying webmasters of suspected hacking for years, but a recent upgrade to our systems will allow us to notify many more site owners that have been hacked. We hope webmasters will find these notifications useful in making sure their sites are clean and secure, ultimately providing a better user experience for their visitors. In the future, we may extend this effort even further to include other types of vulnerabilities or abuse issues.

Just as before, webmasters who have not already signed up for Webmaster Tools may still do so and retrieve previously sent messages within one year of their send date. And if you don't want to miss out on any important messages, remember to use the email forwarding feature to receive these alerts in your inbox.

At Google we're always looking for ways to take advantage of work being done in other parts of the organization. So when a team approached us with a way to follow changes from websites without feeds, we jumped at the opportunity. Post by Liza Ma, Product Manager.

Feeds make it easy to follow updates to all kinds of webpages, from blogs to news sites to Craigslist queries, but unfortunately not all pages on the web have feeds. Today we're rolling out a change in Google Reader that lets you create a custom feed to track changes on pages that don't have their own feed.

These custom feeds are most useful if you want to be alerted whenever a specific page has been updated. For example, if you wanted to follow Google.org's latest products, just type "http://www.google.org/products.html" into Reader's "Add a subscription" field. Click "create a feed", and Reader will periodically visit the page and publish any significant changes it finds as items in a custom feed created just for that page.

Here are some more example feeds for sites without feeds that you could follow:

We provide short snippets of page changes to help you quickly decide if the page is worth revisiting and we're working on improving the quality of these snippets. If you don't want Google to crawl or create feeds for a specific site, site owners can opt-out.

RSS for Static HTML Pages

Lot of real IT users are using Feedburner/Google Reader like applications to keep looking any changes of
RsS Feeds.but i missed a big opportunity(can not mentioned here) in a some website that only have static web pages and no any RSS feeds supported.

Got it ? lets say you need to monitor some website for any changes happens on that. it may be Local government Website which is entirely static, hand-edited HTML pages.

Country-code top-level domains (or ccTLDs) can provide people with a quick and valuable clue about the location of a website—for example, ".fr" for France or ".co.jp" for Japan. However, for certain top level domains like .com, .info and .org, it's not as easy to figure out the location. That's why today we're adding region information supplied by webmasters to the green address line on some Google search results.

This feature is easiest to explain through an example. Let's say you've heard about a boxing club in Canada called "Capital City Boxing." You try a search for [capital city boxing] to find out more, but it's hard to tell which result is the one you're looking for. Here's a screen shot:

None of the results provide any location information in the title or snippet, nor do they have a regional TLD (such as .ca for Canada). The only way to find the result you're looking for is to refine your search ([capital city boxing canada] works) or click through the various links to figure it out. Clicking through the first result reveals that there's apparently another "Capital City Boxing" club in Alabama.

Region tags improve search results by providing valuable information about website location right in the green URL line. Continuing our prior example, here's a screen shot of the new region tag (circled in red):

As you can see, the fourth result now includes the region name "Canada" after the green URL, so you can immediately tell that this result relates to the boxing club in Canada. With the new display, you no longer need to refine your search or click through the results to figure out which page is the one you're looking for. In general, our hope is that these region tags will help searchers more quickly identify which results are most relevant to their queries.

As a webmaster, you can control how this feature works by adjusting your Geographic Targeting settings. Log in to Webmaster Tools and choose Site configuration > Settings > Geographic Target. From here you can associate a particular country/region with your site. These settings will determine the name that appears as a region tag. You can learn more about using the Geographic Target tool in a prior blog post and in our Help Center.

We currently show region tags only for certain domains such as .com and .net where the location information would otherwise be unclear. We don't show region tags for results on domains like .br for Brazil, because the location is already implied by the green URL line in our default display. In addition, we only display region tags when the region supplied by the site owner is different from the domain where the search was entered. For example, if you do a search from the Singapore Google domain (google.com.sg), we won't show you region tags for all the websites webmasters have targeted to Singapore because we'd end up tagging too many results, and the tag is really most relevant for foreign regions. For the initial release, we anticipate roughly 1% of search results pages will include webpages with a region tag.

If you are familiar with Google docs you may need to automatically fire up an email notification when someone enter information for a your form.I use couple of Form for Official Surveys and for some my personal business works as well. every time I have to log and see for any new responses for those Forms.

Don't Use credit card for online transactions because if someone hacked your details you are Sucked ! but You can always use Sampath Bank's Sampath Webcard for online shopping. if something went wrong in this case you only lost very very small amount of money.

Beware of money scams.

what you can do just click on Google Side Wiki and make the comments or notes.when someone come to the virtusa.com and look side Wiki Reviews then he or she can review the comments about the home page.
Probably this would be Mini WiKi page introduced by Google.But my conclusion is about Google Side WiKi is: its great tool to evaluate a web page in context of SEO marketing.

books I read that I would recommend

Last couple of month i was in a busy mode with my office works and my personal business.that was really busy schedule with no time to look in to my blogs .i am daily traveling from my home to Colombo and it takes around 1 and ½ hrs to reach Colombo.but that 1 and ½ i used to read books.and it makes my time 100% utilised !

I registered with ceylinco library located at Ceylinco House (near WTC) and the library is a good library related to other libraries in colombo because it is fully occupied with lot of good books.

I like to read books about business and successful people in the world.The book i read last month that i would recommend is Microsoft’s bill gates The Road Ahead.

Unfortunately this is not a new book but it is fully featured with bill’s life experiences that he faced to build the Microsoft to be world biggest Software company.

You should read this !

This books has entered to the ceylinco library in 1996 and i was the first one who read and return the book first ! lol.

couple of month ago russian hackers hacked the Georgia President's web site while they are fighting with Georgia.so once i read that news on the web i called to one of defence.lk officers and let him know about a possible attack on the defence.lk and related other websites.at that time he said they are using high secure network system and they have closed all entry points that use for hacking.anyhow finally http://www.army.lk/ was hacked by someone (probably a LTTE hacker).anyhow this won't be a huge problem because army.lk is managed by moratuwa University(ww.nic.lk).they will sort out the problem very soon.now they have shut down the website.

Last weekend me and couple of my office friends went a trip to Horton plains.before visiting to hoton plains month back we reserved the Department of Wildlife Conservation official Banglow located @ Horton plains. It is superb with hot water, a cook and lot of facilities. but no any GSM coverage was there .we were isolated for 24 hrs time first time after last 10 years .i had a funny time with my new office folks.

A Trip to Balapitiya natural Pool

Last weekend I and my Virtusa Friends went to Balapitiya natural pool. It is near to my Home town. We played and enjoyed lot. Guys you can see couple of pictures here.

Most of us in the IT field do one thing before leving for the day from office Press CTRL + ALT + DEL and leave happily that means your pc is still on.
one normal PC in sleep Mode (Hibernation) will consume 35 Watts/Hour. Based on this let's do a small calculation.
For one week, 24 * 7 = 168 hours. Of this if we consider that we are working for 68 hours, than the pc is in Sleep mode for 100 hopurs a week. For one month, 4 * 100 = 400 hours. in a normal IT office, if we assume approximately 250 PCs are there 250 * 400 = 1,00,000 hours (Sleep Mode). So, the power wasted in an office in a month is 1,00,000 * 35 = 3500 KWH or units. if the charge per unit is indian rs. 6, then totally the wastage value is approximately indian Rs. 21,000
Here the sad thing is not the money loss to the company but the power loss to the country. (Hope no company is bothered about this procedure of keeping the system in sleep mode.)
apart from the loss to the country, we need to think of the efforts people are putting for producing the power in the mines, Thermal Stations, Hydro Electric Stations, etc. If this is to continue, the cost of unit power will go up and, at one stage, we will not get power even if were ready to pay any cost.
So, before leaving office, take some time to shut down the PC and do some favour to the country and the organisation.

How to Add Sri lankan Holidays to Google Calendar

Open Outlook 2007 you should see sri lankan holidays for 2009.If you have not added sri lankan holidays to Outlook Click here.

Now we are going to add sri lanka holidays to Google Calendar.
-Open Outlook 2007 and click on calendar Button on left side.
-Go to file-> Save As
-Save the calendar as .iCas FileFormat.
-Close outlook and Login to Google Calendar.
-Click on the Bottom Left Add link and then click on Import Calender.See below

-follow the steps from there.

How to Add Sri lankan Holidays to Outlook 2007

Last week our company folks were talking about Holidays. They need to match a date to work for extra works due to Friday unofficial Holiday. Sri lankan holidays are not supported by Outlook. We definitely need to look into a sri lankan calendar for this.
Some few folks have published a way to add sri lankan holidays to the 2008 calendar.
Here I am going to do the same thing for 2009 but I will explain a way to add Outlook Holidays to Google calendar as well.
First we will Add Sri lankan holidays to Outlook 2007.
Download Sri lanka Holidays for 2009.txt

Follow the Steps:
1. Exit Outlook if it is running.
2. In Microsoft Windows Explorer, locate the following file:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\1033\Outlook.hol
3. Open the file using notepad.
4. Add the contents of the above text (between Start Copy and End Copy) at the end of the Outlook.hol and save it.

Updating the Outlook calendar with customized events

To update the Outlook calendar:
1. Start Outlook.
2. On the Tools menu, click Options.
3. On the Preferences tab, under Calendar, click Calendar Options.
4. In the Calendar Options dialog box, under Calendar options, click Add Holidays.
5. Select the check box for your customized set of events and holidays, and then click OK. For this example, select the box labeled Sri Lanka.

Internet while traveling

Search Engine Optimization @ Virtusa

Last Tuesday I did my second K-talk (presentation on a topic or knowledge Talk) about Search Engine Optimization. The presentation was actually an experience for me. All of virtusans have commented me well (as below).
People were asking lot of Questions and I could answer them well.
I had hands on experiences doing SEO. So doing SEO things were not a big game for me but problem was presenting contents to the audience. Today morning I received final feed back for the K-Talk from the Knowledge management Div,Virtusa.

Introduction to Silverlight 2.0

Since Silverlight 1.1 release i was playing with some experiments on Silverlight.but previous version of silver light is difficult to learn.but Believe me SIlverlight 2.0 Beta 2 is easy to learn than any other version.
